The Difference Between Vision and Mission Statements (With Examples)

Learn the difference between a vision and a mission statement. These are important for every business.

Do you know what the difference is between a vision and a mission statement? We’re about to find out.

Welcome to the Love of Business. I’m Crystal.

And I’m Sunshine. Let’s get to it.

So, Crystal, what is the difference between a vision and a mission statement? Because I’m not really sure about that.

Yeah, I get that question a lot. A lot of people don’t know the difference and they get confused about it.

Vision statement

So, the difference between a vision and mission statement is that your vision statement is a destination for your business. So, from five to ten years from now, what you want to have created with your business. It’s a grand destination.

Mission statement

Now, your mission statement is who you are going to be, what your going to do to actually create your vision. So, think about your mission statement as a medium, a pathway to get to your grand destination of your vision.

Make sense?

So, I think I’m getting it. But can you give us a couple of examples that would make it a little more clear?

Sure. We’ll use IKEA today as an example.

Perfect.

Example difference between mission and vision statements

Okay. We’re going to use IKEA today, like I said. But I’m going to actually read from it, so I don’t miss any of the nuances of their vision and mission statement.

So, let’s start with their vision. Their vision statement is, “To create a better everyday life for the many of the people.” Now, their mission, the pathway to get to their vision is, “Offer a wide range of well-designed functional home furnishing products at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them.”

That’s eye opening, Crystal, Thank you for that.

You’re welcome.
