Upselling: An Easy Explanation & Example

Learn an easy explanation of upselling and how it can be an easy add on to increase your average dollar sale.

Sunshine: Are you and your team up selling?

Crystal: Welcome to the Love of Business. I’m Coach Crystal.

Sunshine: And I’m Sunshine. Let’s get to it.

Upselling, I feel like this is going to be about sales.

Crystal: Yes, yes, it is. You betcha.

Sunshine: So, I’m ready to hear what you have to say about it.

What is Upselling?

Crystal: Upselling is a sales technique to induce your customers to buy more expensive items through add-ons and upgrades. And that results in a bigger average dollar sale and higher profitability.

Fast food chains are notorious for up selling. Let’s say you go in and order a hamburger. What is the first thing that they ask you? “Oh, do you want fries with that? Or maybe you’d like the combo meal today.”

Now, upselling can apply to bigger, higher priced items as well, such as cars. When you purchase a car, they usually try to sell you an extended warranty or a maintenance package. So, look at your products and services and see where you can up sell and help your clients out.
