New customers can be brought through the door with a free trial and help with your conversion rate. Learn why they are so powerful for your business.
Sunshine: Are you using free trials to get customers in the door?
Crystal: Welcome to the Love of Business. I’m Crystal.
Sunshine: And I’m Sunshine. Let’s get to it.
Free trial. I don’t really always like free trials.
Crystal: Why is that?
Sunshine: I’m scared I’m going to like it and I’m going to end up buying it. I’m a sucker for buying stuff that I’ve tried.
Crystal: Well, if you tried it and you liked it, why wouldn’t you buy it?
Sunshine: I guess no reason other than I don’t like to spend my money on stuff that I don’t need.
Crystal: So, free trials are great proven conversion strategy. Why do you think a free trial is so powerful and important?
Sunshine: It’s powerful and important because you want your customer to be satisfied with what they are purchasing.
Sunshine: And you want them to be happy with it and you want them to talk about it because you want that free marketing, right? Are there other benefits to free trial?
Crystal: There are a couple more. One being a free trial takes away the risk from actually purchasing from you.
Sunshine: Nobody likes risk.
Crystal: Exactly. And a free trial allows the customer to see the actual value in the service or product they are buying. So, it gives you instant creditability, which is fantastic. Giving a free trial is the same as the puppy dog clause. And let me expand on that.
So, let’s say that a family has some kids and they are begging for a puppy or a dog. So, the family takes the family to a dog shelter and, you know, the kids start playing with the puppies or the dogs. And they fall in love with the dog. And the parents are a little bit hesitant. They don’t know if they should, you know, adopt the dog, purchase the dog, take the dog home. The kids are crying and screaming for the dog. So, the owner or the manager of the shelter come over to them and say, “Look, don’t worry about it. Why don’t you take the dog home for the weekend? And on Monday, if you’re not happy, just bring the dog back. And you don’t have to purchase anything.” So, Monday comes along, weekends over, what do you think happens?
Sunshine: Oh, I’m pretty sure the whole family fell in love with that dog.
Crystal: That’s exactly right.
Sunshine: They probably just went back to sign the paperwork, pay whatever fees were necessary, pick up the rest of the, I don’t know what you do when you adopt a dog. I don’t have one.
Crystal: Food, toys.
Sunshine: Yes. Yeah, they totally fell in love with the animal.
Crystal: So, think about your business and how your customers and prospects can try before they buy.
